Lou had been connected with hockey for over 50 years before retiring from the National Hockey League as Supervisor of Officials in 1992. He started with the NHL back in 1972 and was used primarily as a ‘bird-dog’, pounding the arena beat looking for promising young men who would someday make fine officials in the NHL. The NHL’s Chief Supervisor of Officials, Bryan Lewis, says Maschio “was like a grandfather to many aspiring officials. His quiet, encouraging manner benefited many young men”. But before working in the big leagues as a supervisor, Maschio spent two years on the ice as an NHL official in the 50’s and had the honour of refereeing at the 1964 lnnsbruck Olympics and many World Championships. He was also one of the founding members of the Guelph Referee’s Association. Maschio is a quiet, dedicated family man and in his own quiet way, he has helped many young men get their start in life. Inducted into the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame May 8, 1995
