Former NHL Referee Dave Newell Passes away at 73

Newell worked as an NHL Referee for 23 Seasons followed by 15 years as an Officiating Coach for the league

The NHLOA is mourning the loss of a former colleague today. Dave Newell has passed away at the age of 73.

Dave worked as an NHL Referee from the 1967 season until his retirement from the ice in 1990.
For 9 years, from 1980-1989, Dave served the NHL Officials Association as our President. After retiring from the ice, he took a role as an Officiating Coach for the NHL, mentoring young officials. He worked for the league in that position for 15 years.

Some of Dave's career accomplishments include:

  • 1169 Regular Season Games + 106 Playoff Games
  • 3 Stanley Cup Finals (1981, 1984, 1987)
  • 1980 Allstar Game in Detroit
  • Rendez-Vous '87 - International Series between the NHL and Soviet Union
