In light of recent events in the Canadian capital, the NHLOA had the privilege to be joined by 8 Honour Guards for the game between Chicago Blackhawks and Otttawa Senators on Thursday 30th October. These brave men and women continue to serve at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa and were invited into the officials’ dressing room to chat with Referees Dan O'Rourke, Graham Skilliter and Linesmen Scott Driscoll and Brad Kovachik after the game.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a sarcophagus which holds the remains of an unidentified Canadian soldier who died in France during World War I. It represents the 116,000 Canadian service people who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and over 20,000 who have no known grave. The Tomb and the National War Memorial are a constant reminder to all of the human cost of Canada's commitment to the cause of peace and freedom in the past, present and future. 

Last week, a gunman armed with a rifle, shot and killed Corporal Nathan Cirillo who was standing guard at the War Memorial before proceeding to the Centre Block on nearby Parliament Hill. The NHLOA would like to extend their deepest condolences to Corporal Cirillo’s family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in these difficult times.

The NHLOA would also like to recognize the hard work and dedication of these Honour Guards who continue to serve and wish them the best for the future.
